The camera in the Android phone you stopped carrying is the most expensive lens in the house that nobody is pointing at anything, and that is why this question keeps coming back. Reincubate puts the sales version on the Camo listing: your phone's camera is leagues ahead of any webcam. What has actually changed is quieter: since Android 14 QPR1 the platform itself can present the phone to a computer as an ordinary USB webcam, documented by the Android Open Source Project as a supported feature.
The Android Open Source Project puts it plainly: for devices running Android 14 QPR1 or higher, Android supports using the device as a USB webcam. Such a phone advertises itself as a UVC device, which AOSP says a wide range of USB hosts can use as a webcam. Nothing goes on the computer.
It is a build-time switch, not a setting: AOSP tells manufacturers to set a property called ro.usb.uvc.enabled to true, which is what puts a Webcam option in Settings under USB preferences. Android 14 is the floor, not a promise, and the version screen will not tell you either way, so the Webcam entry itself is the test; updating your Android version is still worth a look if you are behind.
Check the cable first: Google's Pixel instructions begin with a USB cable that supports data, and plenty of spares carry power only, the same trap that moving files between Android and a PC has to clear first. Connect it, tap the Charging this device through USB notification, then under Use USB for select Webcam.
No Webcam entry means nothing is broken. File transfer and charge only are the standard entries there; Webcam is the extra your manufacturer compiled in or did not, and no update or reset adds it.
Google says the phone charges normally over USB in webcam mode, and that you can keep using it, moving between apps or turning the screen off. On a cable the battery question answers itself. Three limits are real.
Heat is the part nobody plans for, though the platform authors did: AOSP tells manufacturers a webcam might be on for multiple hours a day, and to keep power and thermal behaviour in limits. What normal looks like: warm after an hour is expected, not a fault. Stuttering is the phone protecting itself, and the guide to an Android phone running hot has the manufacturers' own thresholds.
If the phone has no Webcam entry and the computer runs Windows 11, Microsoft ships an equivalent needing nothing on the PC. It lists three requirements: Windows 11 or later, Android 10 or later, and Link to Windows at version 1.24022.0 or later. A cable is not one of them.
The path is Settings, Bluetooth and devices, Mobile devices, Manage devices; add the phone if it is not linked, then toggle on Use as connected camera. Microsoft says it then appears as a camera option in Windows settings and other camera apps, and that a missing prompt is fixed by granting Link to Windows the camera permission by hand.
The same pairing puts the phone's screen on the PC, a different job: mirroring an Android screen to Windows works fully only on a partner list of handsets, mostly Samsung. Samsung's own Camera sharing is narrower than its name suggests: Samsung says it feeds a video call on a Galaxy tablet or Galaxy Book, not any PC.
A cable is a closed loop; everything below puts a live picture of your room on a network. Three questions first. What does the Data safety card declare? Iriun's says no data shared and none collected. Camo's says it may share and collect app activity and device identifiers, encrypted in transit. DroidCam's names location among both. Read those calmly: none declares photos or video leaving the device, and app activity plus device identifiers is ordinary crash reporting. Entries are not a finding; a card declaring camera content sent to third parties would be.
What does the desktop half install? Iriun tells you to install drivers from iriun.com, and a virtual camera driver is a camera to every application on that computer, so take it from the vendor's own domain. Camo answers the same worry differently, saying it does not capture or transmit your video feed.
Can anything else reach the feed? DroidCam lists IP web camera MJPEG access, so the picture opens in a browser on another device: fine at home, a poor idea anywhere else. Paid DroidCamX lists a USB only mode for privacy; on a shared or workplace network, use the cable.
Afterwards, checking what an app can access on Android shows which apps still hold the camera. Running a phone unattended as a room camera is a different job, in turning an old phone into a home security camera.

Wi-Fi or USB, up to 4K depending on the phone, works with the screen off, and picked on the desktop as the source for audio and video, so sound comes across. Clients cover Windows, macOS 12.3 or later and Ubuntu 22.04 or later. The Pro list leads with no watermark, the listing's way of saying the free build has one.
Camo Camera, from Reincubate, is the polished one, its header row carrying neither an ads nor an in-app purchases label. It connects by cable or wirelessly, and names Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and OBS Studio. Camo's pricing page caps the free plan at 720p and below, with no watermark, and reserves 4K and every lens for Camo Pro. Camo Studio needs macOS 10.13 or Windows 10 or later, so Linux is out, and the listing describes no microphone source.
DroidCam Webcam (Classic), from Dev47Apps, is the free one, carrying a Contains ads label and the oldest update here, 13 January 2025. Completely free with no usage limits or watermarks, sound and picture together, screen off supported, Wi-Fi or USB with a footnote that USB may need extra setup. Windows and Linux clients only, and 720p and 1080p arrive through HD Mode, listed under the paid DroidCamX.
Read across and it resolves fast: Linux rules Camo out, macOS rules DroidCam out, and sound from the phone rules out both built-in routes.
Google's own documentation makes the case against all of this: an incoming video call, or any app wanting the camera, pauses the webcam stream until you are done. A camera that yields to a phone call is not one you build a classroom, a reception desk or a broadcast around.
So the split is honest. If a computer needs a camera that is always attached and never doing anything else, buy the boring fixed webcam. If what you want is better photographs rather than a feed into a computer, that is a different tool, in the roundup of Android camera apps. The phone wins when the need is occasional and the picture matters more.
