The price is the easy part. What decides whether a phone bought today is still safe to carry in 2030 is the date its maker stops shipping patches, and the cadence that says how often they arrive until then. Google and Samsung each warrant a phone for two years on their own UK support pages, read 8 September 2026, so a phone kept for four spends half its life out of cover, dependent on that date alone. If you came from an old page about an HTC One X or the first Kindle Fire, every shop and network on it has changed; these numbers have not.
The Pixel 10a, From £429
against a £499 list on the Google Store UK, is our pick for a phone bought to last, because Google's availability page dates it to March 2026 in the US, so its seven years run to March 2033, both read 8 September 2026.
The Galaxy S26, £779 against an £879 recommended price on Samsung UK's buy page, read 8 September 2026, is our pick when you want the end date in writing and monthly patches, because its specification prints an end date of 28 February 2033, read 5 September 2026.
The Galaxy Tab S11, £679 on Samsung UK's buy page until the end of 8 September 2026 and £869 after, is our tablet pick, because its specification prints an end date of 30 September 2032, read that day, though Samsung patches it quarterly.
A refurbished phone is our route for a smaller spend only where a battery floor is published, because Back Market, read 8 September 2026, holds its marketplace sellers to a minimum of 80 percent battery health but leaves the warranty with each seller, while giffgaff, which sells to you itself, publishes none.

Length, cadence and end date are three promises, and a phone still patched in 2030 needs all three. Google's Pixel update page, read 8 September 2026, gives the Pixel 8 and later seven years, starting when the device first became available on the Google Store in the US

Neither it nor the Pixel 10 page on the Google Store UK, read the same day, prints a date, but Google publishes one a page further on: Find when your Pixel device became available, read the same day, gives each model's month, so seven years on puts the Pixel 10 at August 2032, the Pixel 10a at March 2033 and the Pixel 11 at August 2033. The blunt part: Google leaves you that arithmetic and publishes no cadence.
Samsung prints the date because a UK law makes it: since 29 April 2024 makers of connectable products sold here must publish a minimum security update period (GOV.UK guidance, updated 17 March 2025). Read in Samsung UK specifications on 8 September 2026, under Security Update Period (Valid until): the Galaxy A57 5G and the A37 5G to 31 March 2032, the A17 5G to 31 August 2031, the Tab S11 and Tab A11 to 30 September 2032; and the Galaxy S26, read 5 September 2026, to 28 February 2033, the longest Samsung date here.
Cadence is the promise nobody advertises. Samsung's scope page, read the same day, puts the Galaxy S23 to S26 families and the current folding phones on monthly updates, and the Galaxy S22, the retail A line and the Tab S11 and Tab A11 on quarterly ones. One retail A phone is listed monthly, the A56 5G; the A57 5G appears only under Enterprise Models, so no monthly cadence is documented for it.
Google put the Pixel 11 in shops on 20 August 2026 with seven years of updates (Google's launch post, 12 August 2026), and the Google Store UK had it from £879 on 8 September 2026, the Pixel 11 Pro from £1,079. Samsung undercuts its own recommended price: on the Samsung UK buy page that day the Galaxy S26 at 256GB was £879 with a promotion at £779, and its specification prints the 28 February 2033 end date above.
On that same Samsung UK page on 8 September 2026 the Galaxy S26 FE was £699, £799 and £949 by storage with no promotion, so £80 more buys the promoted S26 and its printed 2033 date, though Samsung's newsroom release of 27 August 2026 promises the FE seven years of security updates
too. The Galaxy A57 5G was £479 at 128GB, £549 at 256GB and £769 at 512GB that day, £20 and £70 above the £529 and £699 Samsung recommended for those two tiers at its UK launch on 10 April 2026, with only the new 128GB tier below them. The catch at £549: Samsung pairs memory with storage, so that tier is 8GB and only the £769 one is 12GB. Below it sits the cheapest phone here and the longest supported: the Pixel 10a was From £429
against £499 on the Google Store UK that day, and Google dates it to March 2026 in the US, so its seven years run to March 2033, a year past the A57 5G. Below that, no first party UK price could be read at all.
The largest cut on Google's UK store on 8 September 2026 was the Pixel 10 Pro at £649 against £899, £250 off; the Pixel 10 was £549 against £699. Read the struck through figure carefully: the Pixel 10 launched here at £799 on 28 August 2025 (Tech Advisor, 9 October 2025), so £699 is that day's list price, not what anyone paid. Samsung's last generation is the trap: on Samsung UK that day the Galaxy S25 was £799 at 128GB and £889 at 256GB with no promotion, so tier for tier it cost £110 more than the £779 S26.
A barred IMEI will not connect to any network, and without 4G Calling, also known as VoLTE, a phone cannot ring on Three, which runs no 2G: its switch off page, read 8 September 2026, says such a device can text and use data but won't be able to make or receive calls using 4G

The order is fixed, and starts before the money. Dial *#06# for the IMEI, as giffgaff says to, read 8 September 2026, then run it through a blocklist check: that page calls CheckMEND The only definitive way to check if your particular device is barred
at £1.99, while CheckMEND's own site advertises a first free check the same day. A clean report shows none of stolen, lost, insurance claimed, network blocked or barred from resale.
Only then does the grade matter, and grade words do not transfer. Back Market, read 8 September 2026, puts a minimum 90% capacity
battery on its top Premium grade and 80 percent on Excellent, Good and Fair; giffgaff's guide of 20 July 2026 grades Like new, Excellent, Very good and Good with no battery figure, and its warranty page of that date runs 12 months on Good to 24 on Like new. Excellent is the second best grade at one seller and the third best at the other.
The blunt part: not one of these warranties covers a dropped phone. Back Market's warranty of July 2026 and giffgaff's both exclude broken or cracked screens and water damage, and CeX's returns policy, read 8 September 2026, says its warranty doesn't cover physical, liquid and any damage caused by rooting
behind the five year term its warranty FAQ dates to 1 November 2024. Vodafone, read the same day, is the only seller here promising battery health checks and replacements into year three.

Read the warranty before the update promise: they do not last the same time. Samsung UK, read 8 September 2026, gives 24 months on phones and tablets; Google's warranty, read the same day, runs two years from the date of original purchase
and excludes wear and tear, accidents and water damage. Years three and four of a seven year update promise sit outside both.
Neither maker publishes what year three costs. Google's repair charges page, read 8 September 2026, says only that cost depends on several factors like warranty status, type of issue or damage
, Samsung UK says its service partner agrees a price first. Cover has to be bought early or not at all: Pixel Care+, read the same day, starts at £4.99 a month but must begin within 60 days of buying.
The warning first: an older or imported handset can look perfect and still fail on your network. Every UK operator has switched 3G off, EE during January and February 2024 on its own page, read 8 September 2026, Three in November 2025 on its own switch off page, O2 at the end of 2025 per Virgin Media O2 on 23 June 2026, and Vodafone in February 2024 in Which?'s summary of 10 April 2026.
Standalone 5G is sold as 5G+ and gated by the plan, not the phone. EE, read 6 September 2026, requires an All Rounder or Full Works plan bought after 29 August 2024, or any pay monthly handset plan bought after 19 March 2025; O2 and Vodafone, both read 8 September 2026, ask only for a compatible device, a pay monthly plan and, at O2, one of its latest SIMs; Three has none (5g.co.uk, 5 May 2026). For an eSIM, dial *#06# and look for an EID, which EE, read 6 September 2026, says appears only on an eSIM capable phone; our page on transferring an eSIM covers it.
The honest position first, in Which?'s words on 3 September 2026: on Android tablets there aren't as many apps specifically optimised for big screens as you'll find on an iPad

that runs to the end of 8 September 2026, so £679 is today's price and £869 tomorrow's. Its specification carries an end date of 30 September 2032 and microSD support to 2TB, and Samsung patches it quarterly, so the Galaxy S26 collects twelve update runs a year and this tablet four. Apple UK listed the entry iPad at £429 the same day. Take the Tab S11 if the memory card and the printed end date decide it, the iPad if the app catalogue does.
For a child the question is the app store, not the screen: Amazon's Fire tablets run Fire OS, which Amazon's own developer documentation, read 8 September 2026, calls a fork of Android

What does not depend on the retailer is the law, read 6 September 2026. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days from delivery to reject faulty goods for a refund (section 22), and for six months goods that fail are taken not to have conformed unless the trader proves otherwise (section 19). Buying online adds 14 days to cancel for any reason (regulation 30 of the 2013 distance selling rules).

Both makers publish enough to work it out. Samsung UK prints a security update period in each model specification, 28 February 2033 for the Galaxy S26 read 5 September 2026 and 31 March 2032 for the Galaxy A57 5G read 8 September 2026. Google prints the month each Pixel became available in the US and promises seven years from it, so the Pixel 10a runs to March 2033 and the Pixel 11 to August 2033. Checked 8 September 2026.

Online, yes, and that right is separate from the one for faults. Regulation 30 of the 2013 distance selling rules gives 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason; section 22 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives 30 days to reject faulty goods.
